| Scholarships at MCLE
Central to MCLE’s mission is to provide affordable access to our programs to all members of the Massachusetts bar. To this end, MCLE is dedicated to building and expanding its scholarship offerings. We encourage every member of the bar to take advantage of the need-based scholarship initiatives detailed below.
Charles S. Cohen Scholarship Fund
In his work both as an accomplished practtioner and judge, Mr. Cohen exemplified ethical advocacy. The Cohen Scholarship Fund helps train young lawyers to become better advocates.
The Hugh J. Corcoran Scholarship Fund
The Corcoran Scholarship Fund for lawyers practicing in western Massachusetts was
established to honor a man who was dedicated to pro bono service.
The Honorable Frank H. Freedman Scholarship Fund
MCLE has established the Freedman Scholarship Fund to honor the even-handed jurist who, as mayor of Springfield in the 1960s, helped assuage racial tensions.
The Honorable Edward M. Ginsburg Scholarship Fund
On the occasion of his retirement from the Probate and Family Court bench, MCLE has established this scholarship fund to honor Edward M. Ginsburgs untiring service to his community.
The Honorable Edward F. Hennessey Scholarship Fund
The Hennessey Fund was established to further access to continuing legal education opportunities for Massachusetts lawyers who demonstrate financial need. It honors this former chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court.
The Edward F. "Ned" Hines, Jr. Scholarship Fund
In establishing the Hines Scholarship Fund, MCLE honors Ned Hines's unique contributions as an MCLE trustee and its Board president.
The Monroe L. Inker Scholarship Fund
MCLE has established the Inker Scholarship Fund to remember and honor a man whose passion for the law, mastery of courtroom practice, and love of research, writing and teaching spanned a career of more than half a century.
The Honorable Rudolph Kass Scholarship Fund
MCLE has established the Kass Scholarship Fund together with Brown, Rudnick, Freed & Gesmer, to honor Judge Kass on his retirement from the Appeals Court, as well as to expand access to CLE.
The A. David Mazzone Scholarship Fund
The Mazzone Scholarship Fund has been established as a gesture of respect to a person who cared deeply for the human beings who appeared before him in court and benefited greatly from his impartiality and grace.
The Richard S. Milstein Scholarship Fund
Founding MCLE director, Richard S. Milstein, has generously established a fund to expand the availability of need-based scholarships to Massachusetts practitioners. Annual contributions support our service mission of inclusion and outreach to the Massachusetts bar.
The Honorable Walter Jay Skinner Scholarship Fund
The Skinner Scholarship Fund celebrates the life and work of a judge known for his intellect, his generosity, and his profound respect for the human dignity of the litigants who appeared before him in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
The Honorable Joseph P. Warner Scholarship Fund
The Warner Scholarship Fund was established to honor the former Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court, a champion of judicial education and professional development.
The Honorable Herbert P. Wilkins Scholarship Fund
Together with the law firm of Palmer & Dodge, MCLE has established the Wilkins Scholarship Fund to commemorate the retirement of Chief Judtice Herbert P. Wilkins, a jurist who fostered closer relationships between the bar and bench.
The Honorable William G. Young Scholarship Fund
MCLE’s Board of Trustees established this Scholarship Fund to honor Judge Young for his work in educating the Massachusetts bar. Through the Fund, need-based scholarships are awarded to lawyers to attend MCLE programs.
Legal Services and Need-Based Scholarships
On an annual basis, MCLE offers free and deeply discounted course registration to staff attorneys of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, Assistant District Attorneys, civil legal services staff attorneys and private sector practitioners who accept pro bono cases, as well as to a host of pro bono panels, such as the Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Boston Bar Association.
MCLE also strives to extend scholarships to all practitioners who demonstrate financial need. During Fiscal Year 2006, MCLE awarded over $185,000 for in-kind scholarships. MCLE aspires to increase that number in coming years, so that all Massachusetts practitioners may benefit from MCLE’s program offerings.

Rough Justice to Due Process: The District Courts of Massachusetts, 1869–2004
As with any long-standing institution, the District Court has experienced dramatic structural, administrative, and even ideological changes over the 135 years of its existence. Jerome Berg, Court Administrator from 1971 until his recent retirement, recounts this evolution, covering the dramatic shifts that took place, such as a new judicial accountability and the emergence of district courts as community courts.
