Scholarship Campaign update:
Closing in
on the half-way mark

In its last newsletter, MCLE reported that it was on the verge of reaching the $1 million mark towards its goal of raising $2.5 million to endow 1,000 scholarships. In just a few months since the publication of that newsletter, we are pleased to report that the Scholarship Campaign, with more than $1.2 million, is now approaching the half-way mark. Because of the generosity of more than 360 individuals and firms, the Scholarship Campaign can now fund more than 475 scholarships every year, in perpetuity, to legal services staff attorneys, practitioners who accept pro bono cases, and other lawyers who certify financial need. The valuable training these lawyers receive through scholarships to MCLE programs, in turn, benefits all the clients they serve. Moreover, the scholarships MCLE awards to organizations that provide legal services or assign pro bono cases free up those organizations’ limited resources for direct client services and representation.

Several recent developments have contributed to the success of this Campaign, which consists of firm giving, individual giving and contributions to named-scholarship funds. In addition to the Edward F. Hines, Jr. Scholarship Fund described below, two other funds have recently been endowed. MCLE thanks the 40 individuals and firms who contributed to the Hon. Walter Jay Skinner Scholarship Fund. With a total endowment of approximately $40,000, this fund will provide 16 scholarships to MCLE programs every year. Special thanks to Mrs. Sylvia H. Skinner and her family for their considerable support of this namedscholarship fund and to Daniel J. Driscoll, Seth D. Jaffe, Philip Lyons, Robert J. Muldoon, Jr., Richard G. Pichette, and Joseph J. Balliro, Sr. for their work on the committee to establish this fund.

In December, the Hermann Foundation of East Falmouth, MA, donated a substantial gift to establish the Hon. John J. Moynihan Scholarship Fund in honor of the retired Worcester Probate & Family Court judge who died on December 7, 2006. A highly respected jurist known for his gentle nature and compassion, he served as a mentor to many and, as a lawyer, was instrumental in developing the Worcester County Bar Advocate Program. Like many of the other named-scholarship honorees, Judge Moynihan was committed to serving others and was always available to lend a helping and caring hand. MCLE is pleased to create this named scholarship fund in his honor and looks forward to accepting contributions from others who would like to pay tribute in this meaningful way.

In addition to its General Scholarship Endowment, MCLE now proudly honors 18 individuals on its Wall of Tribute in the form of named-scholarship funds and welcomes suggestions from members of the bar regarding others whose lives and work exemplify the best of Massachusetts’ rich legal heritage.

Our Scholarship Campaign depends on the support of individuals and firms who believe in the importance of continuing legal education as the best means of advancing the quality of legal services provided to clients. MCLE is in the process of establishing “Senior Partners for CLE” to recognize those individuals who have demonstrated a leadership commitment to continuing legal education by contributing $25,000 or more to MCLE’s Scholarship Endowment either through cumulative lifetime giving or by remembering MCLE in their wills and estate plans. Most recently, John F. (Jack) Cogan, Jr. of WilmerHale has become a Senior Partner for CLE, joining Paul S. Doherty, Richard Milstein, Joseph E. Mullaney, and Joan Corcoran Steiger. It is with their help, and with the help and support of all those who generously support our Scholarship Campaign, that MCLE will achieve its goal.

Hines Scholarship Fund surpasses $100,000 mark
Choate, Hall & Stewart’s leadership gift pushes fund over the top

With the assistance of a dedicated committee and approximately 50 generous donors, total pledges and contributions to the Edward F. Hines, Jr. Scholarship Fund now exceed $116,000, making it the largest named-scholarship endowment at MCLE. We owe a debt of gratitude to Thomas Maffei and Nolly Corley whose active leadership of the committee has been vital to the fund’s success. Special thanks also to the members of Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP for their leadership gift in honor of their former managing partner. The firm’s $25,000 pledge and the personal contributions of several of its partners demonstrate their deep affection and respect for Ned and a strong example of leadership among firms and commitment to MCLE’s educational mission.

Family members of Ned Hines take a moment to look at his picture on MCLE’s Wall of Tribute during MCLE’s annual meeting reception on December 6, 2006.

The work of the committee and generosity of the donors underscore the respect and admiration that so many had for an outstanding member of the Massachusetts legal community who served as a model for lawyers not only in his commitment to the law and his clients as a brilliant tax attorney, but also in his tireless commitment to public service and charity. As a partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart and later founding partner of Hines & Corley, Ned Hines was an advisor and mentor to many. From his important work with and chairmanship of the American Heart Association to his leadership and active involvement in so many bar activities and organizations, including the Boston Bar Association and MCLE, he was a role model and philanthropist who led by example. In all he did, he enriched the lives of everyone he touched.

In addition to paying tribute to an extraordinary person, this endowment will fund more than 45 civil legal services and needs-based scholarships to MCLE programs every year, in perpetuity—all in Ned’s name. Ned, a former MCLE president and active volunteer, was a strong advocate for MCLE over the years who was instrumental in nourishing and building our organization. He, himself, believed that, by providing scholarships to lawyers who represent low-income and underserved populations, MCLE can do its part in making sure that all persons in Massachusetts, regardless of means, can have access to quality legal services—which, of course, begins with the education of lawyers.

We were privileged to have known and worked with Ned, and we hope that this named scholarship fund is a fitting way to honor and express our appreciation and respect for his legacy and to create a lasting and meaningful tribute to him. We thank all those who are helping to fulfill the promise of this special fund.

Giving to MCLE
Individuals, firms, and other organizations may contribute any amount to the general Scholarship Endowment or to an existing named scholarship fund, or create a personal and lasting legacy by contributing a minimum of $25,000 to establish a named scholarship in honor of a colleague, mentor, or family member whose life and work exemplifies the best of Massachusetts rich legal heritage. We recognize honorees on our Wall of Tribute and by providing scholarships in their names every year. In this lasting and meaningful way, they are recognized and remembered in perpetuity.

Each gift of $2,500 supports one scholarship annually and will be recognized by a plaque bearing the donor’s name on a seat in Milstein Hall. For gifts of $500 or more, donors are recognized by giving level on our Donor Honor Roll, which hangs in the vestibule of MCLE’s Boston Conference Center and which is published, as updated, in various forms throughout the year. For gifts of $25,000 or more, donors are recognized as “Senior Partners for CLE” to honor those who have demonstrated a leadership commitment to continuing legal education.

For additional information on giving opportunities, or to discuss the possibility of establishing a named scholarship fund, please contact Salvatore Ricciardone, Esq., Director of Philanthropy, MCLE, Inc., Ten Winter Place, Boston, MA 02108-4751, 617-350-7006 ext. 1404.
