That's 5,000 forms, 3,000 articles and over 35 years of practical CLE content. What's more, new content is added weekly.
The library is fully searchable, and when your search term is found, it will be highlighted in the text to make finding the information you need quick and easy. The MCLE OnlineLibrary works on almost any desktop or laptop computer, without the need for additional software or downloads. With the MCLE OnlineLibrary the answer really is "on your desktop."

Can I perform advanced searches of OnlineLibrary™ content?
Yes. MCLE's advanced search allows you to search for specific words or phrases, combining them with Boolean operators to maximize the efficiency of your search (click here to learn more about Boolean operators) . If you know you are searching only one practice area, you can choose to search within only one of MCLE's eight primary practice areas, or one of the seventeen more specific subpractice areas. You can limit your search to return only those articles or forms that have been written within a specific date range, and you can also select to see only articles or only forms. To perform an advanced search on the MCLE OnlineLibrary click here.
Hint: even if you prefer to read on paper, and already own the book, this type of searching is an invaluable time saver.

Am I able to limit my searches of OnlineLibrary™ content to a particular practice area?
Yes. Using MCLE's advanced search you can limit all of your searches by practice area, including searches within the MCLE OnlineLibrary. MCLE classifies all articles and forms by one of its eight main practice areas: Business and Commercial Law, Civil Litigation, Criminal Law, Employment and Worker's Compensation Law, Estate Planning and Administration, Family and Mental Health Law, Real Estate and Environmental Law, and Other Practice Specialties. If you want to be even more precise MCLE has further classified a large number of its products using seventeen sub-practice areas within the eight main areas to give an even greater degree of control, including areas such as Health and Hospital Law, Evidence, and Government Benefits. To perform an advanced search on the MCLE OnlineLibrary click here.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
Is the content in the OnlineLibrary™ arranged similarily to the print publications' content?
Yes. Each article and form within the MCLE OnlineLibrary can be thought of as a part of an electronic "book." Each of these books has an electronic tables of contents listing the chapters, sections, and subsections within the book. Whenever you are in an MCLE OnlineLibrary article or form you will see this table of contents, allowing you to easily and quickly move between the articles and forms in a book. This feature of the MCLE OnlineLibrary will significantly cut research times, and when combined with the search capabilities of the site, the OnlineLibrary becomes an incredibly powerful research tool. Why would I want to renew my subscription to the OnlineLibrary™ after I already received access to all the titles MCLE publishes in my first year?
The law changes every day. MCLE responds to this ongoing development by continuously updating its practice manuals, and developing programs with up to the minute program materials, all of these updates are routinely added to the library. If you want to stay on top of Massachusetts legal practice an annual subscription to the MCLE OnlineLibrary offers a very affordable means to do so. Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
I am an MCLE sponsor member, do I get a discount on the MCLE OnlineLibrary™?
Yes, individuals and firms can immediately deduct your sponsor membership dues from the subscription price of the MCLE OnlineLibrary. For example, an individual who pays $95 for sponsor membership can deduct $95 from the subscription price. For a firm, the rate varies with firm size; for example a firm of eighteen Massachusetts attorneys pays $500 for sponsor membership, and would pay $2,095 for a one year subscription to the library, as a sponsor member you pay only $1,595; that's a $500 saving!
New lawyers are an exception: If you are a new lawyer, meaning that you were admitted to the bar in the last five years, then your price for the library is just $195, whether you are a sponsor or not.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
How do I know if I eligible for a discount on the MCLE OnlineLibrary™?
If you practice as a solo and are an individual sponsor member, or if your firm is a sponsor member, then you automatically receive a discount, see here.
As a repeat customer, you can get an even deeper discount on your first year's subscription. Each time you or someone at your firm makes a purchase with MCLE, you will receive a special introductory offer for the OnlineLibrary. This special offer is the price of the library, minus the total amount of the most recent purchase placed by you or someone at your firm. For example, an attorney from a firm of four lawyers purchases MCLE's Criminal Law Sourcebook and Citator, and pay $250. MCLE will automatically extend the firm a one year MCLE OnlineLibrary subscription for $445, which is $250 off the standard price of $695.
The discount is based on the most recent purchase made. Also this is an introductory offer only, renewals for subsequent years are based on the size of firm and sponsor status, click here for pricing details.
Once you or someone at your firm has made a purchase, just enter the special code you received in your confirmation email on the free trial/subscribe page to find out what the discounted cost of the library will be for your firm. If you don't have a discount code, the MCLE OnlineLibrary is still great value, and you can purchase a subscription today, just click here. Of course you could attend an MCLE program or buy a book, in which case, you can then subtract what you pay for that product from the price of the library subscription.
Hint: Check that no-one else in your firm is planning to make a purchase from MCLE in the near future. Otherwise, you will miss out on some savings. Instead, bundle your purchases so you can pay less for your subscription!
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
How do I use my discount code for the MCLE OnlineLibrary™?
When you last placed an order, you received an email confirmation with a code number, and that code number would also have appeared on your order confirmation screen if you ordered through this website. Enter that code number in the box on the free trial/subscribe page and the site will guide you through the rest of the set-up process. If we don't have your email address on file, you can't receive this special offer; so please contact MCLE (either by email at askmcle@mcle.org or at 1-800-966-6253 extension 7) to provide us with your email address. This will enable you to receive future order confirmations via email.
If you are a member of a firm, the offer is tied to the firm, not you as an individual. Any individual using a code to sign up a firm will be required to become the firm administrator. For more information on the administrator's role see here.

I am a member of a firm, but want an individual MCLE OnlineLibrary™ subscription, can I do that?
No, but if you are at a firm, the firm needs to have a library subscription for you to access the library.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
I am a member of a firm that subscribes to the MCLE OnlineLibrary™. How do I use the library through the firm's subscription?
Simply sign-in to your individual mcle.org account using your email and password (you can sign in using the yellow box on the left of this page). You will instantly get access to the library through the firm's account. After you sign in click here to browse the library.
Having problems? The answer may be in the next question…
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
I can't get access to the MCLE OnlineLibrary™ through my firm's account. What's wrong?
There are two things to check:
First, make sure your firm does have an MCLE OnlineLibrary subscription.
Second, make sure your individual MCLE account is tied to the firm account. Ask your firm's MCLE OnlineLibrary administrator (often the librarian) to check whether you are linked to the firm. If the answer is "No," then ask him or her to link you to the firm account. If the firm administrator is not sure how to do this, refer him or her to the following section...
If you still can't get into the library, contact MCLE's customer service team either by email or by calling 1-800-966-6253 extension 7.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
What does the firm administrator do, and how do I do it?
As a firm administrator, you have two major roles:
First, you will handle the firm's subscription to the MCLE OnlineLibrary, purchasing the subscription and then renewing the subscription each year.
Second, you will ensure that the firm's information is up to date. This involves updating the firm's contact information and maintaining the firm roster.
The firm roster maintenance screen is a visual display of the firm's structure. You can see the firm's main office, the branch offices, and which individuals are attached to each office. A set of user friendly tools allows you to add people to the firm, remove people from the firm, and move individuals between branches.
Why is roster maintenance important? Only those individuals attached to the firm can access the MCLE OnlineLibrary through the firm's account. Once a person is linked to a firm, access to the library is automatic. This makes using the library incredibly easy, but also means that the firm roster has to be maintained.

How would a public library set up an account for the MCLE OnlineLibrary™?
For libraries not attached to a firm, MCLE sells library subscriptions to the MCLE OnlineLibrary. We will set up a predetermined number of public access accounts with the designated administrator. The administrator signs into one of these public access accounts on each public access computer terminal. Once that terminal is signed in to a public access account, any user who sits down at that terminal can use the library's MCLE OnlineLibrary account. The library's account cannot be used remotely; only the library administrator can log-in to the library's public accounts, and only one user can use each public access account at any one time.
Contact MCLE's customer service team at 1-800-966-6253 extension 7 or by email to discuss setting up such accounts.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
How would a firm library set up an account for the MCLE OnlineLibrary™?
For firm libraries MCLE will create one or more public accounts for the library. A librarian then signs into one of these public accounts and leaves the account open on a designated terminal. Any individual sitting down at that terminal can then get access to the MCLE OnlineLibrary. Of course, since all the individuals at the firm can get access through the firm's account this may be of limited use.
Contact MCLE's customer service team at 1-800-966-6253 extension 7 or by email to discuss setting up such accounts.

Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the MCLE OnlineLibrary list of questions
How do I listen to mp3 recordings I have purchased?
You have three options:
One
You can listen to the mp3 recording streaming over the internet, although if you do not have a high speed connection, this method may result in the audio file “jumping” from time to time. To listen to the recording streamed over the internet, simply click on the segment links on the audio program agenda page. Your internet browser should automatically launch a media player. If you don't hear anything, click here to run the system requirements check.
Two
You can download the mp3 recording to your desktop and listen to it from there. To download the program, click the link on the audio program agenda page. Next click the "run" button in the Download Dialogue box that will appear to automatically extract the mp3 files. The files will extract to a folder on your C:/ drive named with the program number (ex. 2080054WAU) unless you specify a different location in the WinZip extraction box.
On a PC, open the agenda page included in the download (MS Word file) and click on the segment links you wish to listen to, or access each of the individual mp3 files directly and play them through your media player of choice, iTunes, Windows Media Player, QuickTime or a number of other applications.
On a Mac, the process is a little different: A Mac will not automatically unpack the “.exe” file, so you still download the file in the same way as you would on a PC. But once you have it on your desktop, you need to tell your computer which program to use to unpack the files. A good option is StuffIt Expander, which is available as a free download from www.smithmicro.com. Simply go to the site and search for StuffIt Expander; you will be offered the option to download the program for free. Download the file, double click the .dmg file, and follow the on-screen instructions to install the application. Once StuffIt is installed, hold “Control” and click on the “.exe” file that you downloaded, choose the “Open With” option and then “Other…”. Select the StuffIt Expander application from the list. The application will unpack the “.exe” file and place the mp3 files in a folder of your choice. You can then play the individual mp3 files through your media player of choice.
Three
You can download the files onto your desktop, as described above, and then transfer them to an mp3 player, such as an iPod. That way, you can listen to your MCLE program as you go about your daily business. Once you've downloaded the file following the instructions in the previous paragraph, click here to get detailed information about transferring the mp3 files onto your mp3 player.

You can for audio programs, which are delivered in mp3 format; but you cannot put webcasts onto an iPod directly, although if you have internet access through your mp3 player, an iPhone for example, then you can watch your webcast on your phone by navigating to the webcast as you would using your desktop.
When you have purchased the program, you can download the sections of the program and load them onto your iPod as if they were any other audio file. For instructions on downloading the files click here.
Once you have the files on your desktop, do the following to get the mp3 files onto your iPod: Open iTunes. From the "File" menu choose "Add to Library." Navigate to the mp3 files you downloaded. Select each of the files and choose "Open." This will enable you to add the files to your iTunes music library. From here you can simply connect your iPod to your computer and drag and drop the mp3 files onto your iPod as you would normally do for any music file.

How can I tell if a program is being webcast?
To check whether a specific program is being webcast, the easiest thing to do is to navigate to the advanced search screen, type in the name of the program and direct the search to only return webcast programs in your search. This method will locate any live or archived webcasts of the program you're looking for.
If you are not sure of the title of the program, use the program calendar to browse future live webcasts: Click here to go to the calendar, and then use the filters to show just the webcasts. A similar procedure can be used to browse archived webcasts: Click here to go to the OnDemand browse screen, and use the filter to display only webcasts.

If I miss a live program can I still see the webcast?
If a program is webcast live, then it will also be added to the webcast archive. If the program is not webcast live, it will not normally show up in the archive.
If you know that you are not going to be able to attend a live program that you wish to attend, check in advance to see if the program is going to be webcast by looking on the program calendar page. Click here. If the program is being webcast, then you have the option of either watching the webcast live, or waiting until the webcast is added to the archive and purchasing the program at your leisure. Click here to search the archive.
Note: You cannot purchase an archive webcast in advance of the program date.

Do I still receive written materials if I register for a webcast, instead of coming to the live program?
When you watch a webcast, you will be able to download PDF versions of any materials developed especially for that program, including any program materials and additional handouts that the faculty develop. But you will not receive hardcopies of any materials in the mail.
Unclear as to which materials you will have access to if you purchase a webcast? Please contact MCLE's customer service team at 1-800-966-6253 extension 7 or by email, and they will clarify which materials are available with the webcast.

I am registered for a webcast of a program but have forgotten the date and time of the program. How do I find out when the webcast is going to happen?
There are two easy ways to solve this problem: either look up the program online by accessing the MCLE program calendar, the date and time are listed on the program catalog page, or check your confirmation email, which lists the date, time and location of the program.
Alternatively, you could also contact MCLE customer service, either by email or by calling 1-800-966-6253 extension 7.
If you did not receive a confirmation email then we do not have a valid email on file for you. You may want to contact MCLE and provide one to avoid this problem in the future.
Note: if you are not receiving confirmation emails then you are missing out on discounts. MCLE values its customers and often extends large discounts on future purchases to those customers, but we only do this through the confirmation emails so make sure you are receiving them!

Searching & Browsing
How do I browse MCLE's products?
MCLE's website features four product categories: Live Programs (both in-person and webcast), Books & CDs, OnDemand programs (both recorded mp3 and webcast), and the OnlineLibrary.
Use the navigation bar at the top of the page, just underneath the header image, to jump to the section you're interested in. When you jump to one of these categories you'll see the initial browse page containing a list of products within the category. Browse MCLE's products simply by scrolling up or down the page.
On the Browse page, you'll see a number of filters you can apply to limit your browse, e.g., by practice area. This enables you to focus in on what's of most interest to you.
Still not finding what you want quickly enough? Try sorting your results: The Browse page gives you a number of different options to sort your results. And you can always sort in ascending or descending order.

How do I search for products and CLE content on www.mcle.org?
There is a simple, "Google-esqe" search box at the top of every page. If you just want to search for a simple word or phrase, this is the quickest and easiest place to start.
As you navigate around the website, you'll see "radio buttons" next to the simple search box. These allow you to either search the entire website, or limit your search to products specific to the section you are in.
Getting too many results from this type of search? Or are your results not specific enough? Try the website's Advanced Search. Go to the Advanced Search screen by clicking the link next to the simple Search box at the top of the screen. Click here for details on how to use the Advanced Search functionality.

What are the advantages of a Boolean search, and how do I perform one?
A Boolean search is a fancy way of saying that you can search for a number of different words or phrases at once. For example, if you wanted to search for a book that discussed the implications of immigration law in hiring an employee, you could use a Boolean search to return MCLE products that contain the words "immigration" and "hiring." You can also exclude certain terms by using the Boolean "not" operator.
Boolean searches can be conducted from the Advanced Search screen. At the top of the search box are three "Google-esqe" text boxes where you can type the words you want in your search. Following the text boxes are three drop-down menus holding the Boolean operators you can use to combine the words in the text boxes.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the Searching & Browsing list of questions
How do I limit my search to a specific product type?
Navigate to the Advanced Search screen, where you can limit your search to only return products in certain categories. On the left-hand side of the page, you'll see a list of all MCLE's different product types. Simply select the one you are looking for, type the words or phrases you are looking for in the text search boxes at the top of the left hand column, and click to search. Click here to go to the Advanced Search screen.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the Searching & Browsing list of questions
What is the difference between Browse and Search?
When you browse on the MCLE website you're looking over a list of products, for example you may be looking over a list of books or a list of upcoming programs. While you can filter these lists somewhat to show only certain products with a category, browsing is limited in two ways: First you can't browse multiple product types; Second, you will only see the titles of products and not a description of the product. Browsing is the best way to go when you aren't really sure what terms to search.
Unlike browing, searching allows you to find specific terms or phrases anywhere on the website with one or two simple clicks. MCLE's search operates like a "web crawler," looking at every page on the site that contains our product descriptions and the entire contents of our written collection. The search will return all the places that it finds a search term or phrase, whether it is in a product description or in the text of a publication. Search is by far the more convenient method for finding products if you know precisely what you are looking for.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the Searching & Browsing list of questions
What does "full-text" searching mean?
MCLE's search engine employs "full-text" searching. That means it will search all of the written content of the website looking for specific terms or phrases. That content has two main sources first, the catalog descriptions of our products, including all books, programs and OnDemand products, and secondly, the entire contents of the OnlineLibrary. Since the OnlineLibrary contains MCLE's entire publications collection, when you perform a search on the MCLE website you are not only checking to see if your term or phrase appears in the description of a product, you are searching the entire MCLE written collection, chapter by chapter, form by form, to find that word or phrase. The best part of all this? The search only takes a second or two!
Click here to go to the advanced search screen.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the Searching & Browsing list of questions
How do I maximize the usefulness of my hits?
The more precise the search, the more relevant the list of results. If you're getting too many results, try using a more precise search term or combination of terms. Or, limit the product types that are returned. For example, if you know you're not interested in listening to a CD, exclude CDs from the search. If you know you need the content immediately, skip Programs and focus your search on OnlineLibrary or OnDemand products.
The basic principle in searching MCLE's website is this: To limit the search results, add more criteria to the search using the left-hand side of the advanced search screen. Click here to go there now.
Back to the FAQs table of contents | Back to the Searching & Browsing list of questions
No results are coming up from my search, what went wrong?
In all likelihood the search you performed is too specific. Try using a slightly more general term in your search, or try including some product types that you were formerly excluding. One possible reason is that you selected a specific practice area in your search; MCLE does its best to categorize its products by practice area in a way that will make the most sense to most people, however there will always be cases where MCLE's categorization seems a little idiosyncratic, the best solution may be to remove the practice area filters you had in place. Click here to go back to the advanced search screen.
If you still can't find what you are looking for why not email us with a new product suggestion at askmcle@mcle.org.

Does MCLE's search engine bring up hits from documents that are in PDF format?
Yes. There are some documents on the MCLE that have to be produced in PDF format, including certain forms from the Massachusetts courts and downloadable documents such as order forms. When you search the website the contents of these PDFs will be searched, along with the rest of the content on the site. Click here to go to the advanced search screen.

I'm trying to set up an account, but the website tells me that an account already exists; why?
MCLE maintains a database of all Massachusetts attorneys, as well as an extensive database of non-attorneys and attorneys from other states. To avoid errors in order histories and duplicate mailings, this site will not allow you to create a new account if your information matches one already in our database. If this should happen, please do the following:
First, type in your email address into the sign in box at the left and click the forgotten password link. If we have your email address on file in your account, we will send out a temporary password to that address. You can then sign in using your email address and this temporary password. You can change your password once you are signed in.
Second, if you try the above step and are prompted to create an account instead of having a password email to you, we do not have your email address on file in your account. Please contact MCLE's customer service by email or at (617) 482-2205, extension 7, so we can add your email address to your existing MCLE account.

I need CLE credits for a mandatory state; how are these credits reported?
MCLE is an accredited sponsor of continuing legal education for Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. CLE credit forms are available at the end of each MCLE program, or at the end of each day for a multiple day program. For most states reporting is easy, simply collect a copy of a CLE credit form and submit a copy to your state bar. If you need CLE credits for New Hampshire or New York, MCLE has to file certain paperwork on your behalf. An MCLE customer service representative will be happy to discuss this process with you at the end of the program (please have a business card handy to expedite this process).
