HON. PAUL A. CHERNOFF has been an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court since 1984. Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court bench, he served as an associate justice of the Newton Division of the District Court Department for approximately eight years. Upon graduating from George Washington University Law School, Judge Chernoff began his legal career as a public defender in the District of Columbia from 1968 to 1972 and was admitted to practice in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1970. After his stint as public defender in Washington, D.C., he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar and served as chairperson of the Massachusetts Parole Board from 1972 to 1976. He has served and continues to serve on various committees and task forces. In 1990, he was appointed chairperson of the Governor’s Special Commission on Correctional Alternatives. He has been the chairperson of the Superior Court Education Committee since 1992. Extensively involved in educational endeavors, he has taught on the faculty of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, since 1978 and has taught trial practices courses at Boston College Law School since 1988. He has served on various faculties for MCLE and has been actively involved in MCLE’s annual Trial Advocacy Workshop since 1988. In 1997, he received the Judicial Recognition Award from the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys (MATA). In 1998, he also received the Superior Court Award for Judicial Excellence from the Massachusetts Judges Conference. In August 2007, Judge Chernoff received the Boston Bar Association’s Haskell Cohn Award. Judge Chernoff is the author of “Impatient Millionaires: The Lottery Session in the Superior Court,” Boston Bar Journal (January/February 2008). Judge Chernoff is a graduate of Tufts University and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey prior to entering the field of law. (March 2008)
