HON. JOHN M. GREANEY is an associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Greaney received his B.A. degree with honors from the College of the Holy Cross and his J.D. degree from New York University School of Law, where he served as the editor-in-chief of the Annual Survey of American Law. He has honorary degrees from Western New England College, Westfield State College, and the New England School of Law. He served with the 104th Tactical Fighter Group of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, and engaged in the general practice of law with the firm of Ely and King in Springfield. In 1974, he was appointed as the presiding judge of the Hampden County Housing Court. In 1976, he was appointed as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. In 1978, Justice Greaney was appointed as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court and as that court’s chief justice in 1984. In 1989, he assumed his present position as an associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Greaney has lectured and written extensively for continuing legal and judicial education programs, and has served on special gubernatorial com-missions, including the Massachusetts Housing Partnership and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force. He was cochair, with Justice Ruth I. Abrams of the Supreme Judicial Court, of the Gender Bias Study Commission appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court. Among other organizations, Justice Greaney holds membership in many bar associations, the American Law Institute, and the American Bar Association Foundation. (April 2008)
