    Product Description

Every family lawyer knows that money matters. No matter the size of your client’s estate, he or she is looking to you to protect and preserve the financial assets at stake. Uncovering, understanding, and explaining income, assets, debt, and equity are the first steps in this process. Using this information to your benefit is the second. This year’s Family Law Financial Forum 2016 guides you through the steps of trying your complex financial case. Whether resolution is attained in the courtroom, or in mediation or conciliation, you need to know how to navigate the process to achieve the best outcome for your client.

For practitioners of all experience levels, the program begins by setting forth a hypothetical fact pattern. Expert lawyers and financial experts work with the audience to brainstorm issues presented as well as what those issues suggest for purposes of client intake. A panel on financial discovery then guides you through what information you should be looking for and how you should proceed in discovery to obtain it. From there, we move into breakout sessions to enhance your knowledge of the crucial relationship between lawyers and financial experts. After lunch, return to the plenary session for practical guidance on handling asset division versus support, the potential for double dipping, and issues of business valuation. A second breakout session offers different opportunities that allow newer practitioners to learn evidence and trial procedures from experts while more experienced attorneys discuss using valuation experts. Finally, let expert faculty tie it all together for you in the closing panel that helps you prepare your expert for trial, proposed findings, and quite simply—what to do at trial with the evidence you uncover during discovery.

Let the experts teach you how to increase your awareness and improve your advocacy skills so you can be confident in taking on the next complex financial case that comes your way.
