In-House Copy Editor

The Copy Editor works as part of MCLE's production team, under the supervision of the Production Coordinator, preparing submitted manuscripts for publication.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Corrects syntax, spelling, grammar, style, and punctuation of assigned manuscripts, applying editorial conventions that promote the clarity and readability of the content.
  2. Formats authors’ original submissions (including exhibits) and/or most recent final chapters using appropriate template for new and revised editions.
  3. Highlight significant manuscript edits and format changes with queries to Publications Attorney.
  4. Inputs, formats, proofreads, and copyedits edits from attorney, author, and editor reviews into manuscript pages.
  5. Inserts cross-reference markers in manuscript.
  6. Corrects appearance (bad breaks, page balance) of formatted chapter pages.
  7. Generates updated chapter TOC.
  8. Prepares chapter files for indexing and finalizes chapters.
  9. Creates and or updates front matter for titles including: copy editing preface, acknowledgments, and author bios; creating tables of contents, checklists, and exhibits; copyediting subscriber letter; and inserting download information page as appropriate.
  10. Composes filing instructions for interfiled supplements.
  11. Reviews and formats indexes resolving any indexer queries with Publications Attorney and makes any necessary changes to final files.
  12. Updates project tracking files on production SharePoint site and communicates any unresolved or pending issues to Production Coordinator as they occur.
  13. Proposes appropriate updates of house style.
  14. Participates in seminar administration and general office responsibilities.

Publications Assistant

The Publications Assistant collaborates with the Publications Attorneys to support publications development, assisting with project management and public relations/general administration.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Handles authors’ correspondence, publishing acknowledgments, author biographies, permissions, exhibits, Library of Congress numbers, and copyrights.
  2. Assists with telephone and email follow-up and circulation of review galleys.
  3. Maintains and updates publications data used for weekly status reporting.
  4. Coordinates with Customer Service Department to maintain and update database to include all authors and editors for use on website and print rosters.
  5. Coordinates distribution of author complimentary copies of books.
  6. Provides editorial support and proofreading as needed on correspondence, brochures and other publications materials.
  7. Maintains library with books, supplements, journals, etc.
  8. Participates in seminar administration and general office responsibilities.
  9. Assists with other projects as needed.

Freelance Legal Researcher/Writer/Attorney

Attorneys sought for part-time freelance assignments requiring cite checking and other legal research in a variety of practice areas. Position requires excellent legal research and writing skills, knowledge of Bluebook citation style, and access to electronic legal research databases (contractor does not provide access or pay expenses). Law practice experience preferred. Each project has a one-week to one-month turnaround, depending on the job. New projects may be assigned throughout the year.
