Massachusetts, like the rest of the United States, follows the “employment-at-will” doctrine. This means that an employee is free to leave his or her employment at any time, without advance notice, and without having to give a reason for doing so. Conversely, an employer is free to terminate its employee for any reason, or no reason at all, so long as that reason is not illegal. While the foregoing is fairly well known, the myriad exceptions to the employment-at-will doctrine and numerous legal protections an employee-at-will has are less well-known.
