NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS

In addition to providing essential funding for scholarships, named scholarship funds honor and pay tribute to outstanding lawyers and judges whose lives and work exemplify the best of Massachusetts' rich legal heritage and who have contributed so much to the legal profession's landscape.

The Robert J. Muldoon, Jr. Scholarship Fund

Robert J. Muldoon, Jr., 1936–2022
Managing Partner, Sherin and Lodgen LLP

An insightful and deeply intellectual attorney with a theatrical flair who showed equal devotion to his practice, his family, and his community.

Robert J. Muldoon, Jr. is a name that rings loud throughout the Massachusetts legal community, particularly in the halls of MCLE. An MBA Gold Medal Award recipient, Managing Partner at Sherin and Lodgen, MCLE Board President, Chair of the National Conference of Bar Examiners, and Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Bob Muldoon was an exceptionally accomplished figure with a diverse portfolio of practice and volunteer experience.

After graduating from Boston College Law School in 1965, Bob Muldoon began his remarkable legal career with a clerkship at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court under Hon. Paul G. Kirk before eventually going on to practice at the prestigious law firms of Withington, Cross, Park & Grodin and later Sherin and Lodgen LLP. An expert litigator, he represented major national and international institutions including the Massachusetts Teachers Association, real estate developer Jerome Rapapport, and numerous others. Among his most renowned accomplishments, Bob Muldoon worked with friend and colleague Rudolph Kass to successfully represent the Residents of Arlington in their fight to preserve Spy Pond, a highly valued community resource for the city. The environmental landscape of Arlington today continues to bear the mark of his work.

Bob Muldoon's dedication and contributions to the legal profession extended beyond his private practice. He served on the MCLE Board of Trustees for 3 terms, including for one term as President from 1993–1995, and spent 23 years volunteering on MCLE programs and publications. Like MCLE, he shared a deep commitment to education and professional development, which was tangible in the high standard of professionalism that he reliably upheld. Bob Muldoon was always ready to share his knowledge and expertise, including as a contributor to CLE, as a mentor to his colleagues, and as a role model in the public eye.

In memory of this giant of the bar, Boston law firms Sherin and Lodgen LLP and Kenney & Sams, PC have collaborated with MCLE to establish the Robert J. Muldoon, Jr. Scholarship Fund. Together, these two firms have pledged the first $10,000 to launch the scholarship fund campaign with the goal of reaching $25,000. This amount will allow MCLE to endow 10 scholarships every year, in perpetuity.

The Robert J. Muldoon, Jr. Scholarship Fund will stand as a permanent tribute to Bob Muldoon's legacy at the institution that he was instrumental in leading and furthering as President of the Board. In honor of his legacy as an unrelenting advocate of continuing legal education, this scholarship fund will serve to make MCLE programs and publications accessible to those who would not otherwise be able to afford them. The beneficiaries of the fund will include legal services attorneys, pro-bono attorneys, solo practitioners, new lawyers, and other advocates who work to serve the public interest.
