Product Description
This program explains the basics of taking a mixed-use development project from concept to occupancy—through the lens of Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. After identifying a mutual goal of redeveloping the Fenway and transforming its automobile-oriented thoroughfare and accessory parking lots into vibrant mixed-use development, the residents of the Fenway, its property owners, and the City of Boston embarked on a five-year process to create consensus zoning reflecting these goals and, just over a decade later, are seeing their vision realized. Learn from the experts who helped turn that vision into reality.
The faculty provide attorneys with essential insights on the mixed-use development process, including practical tips and pitfalls to avoid; planners and other non-lawyers may also find the program valuable. Environmental and land use attorney Kathleen Brill reviews the permitting process and environmental considerations. Real estate attorney Donald Wiest provides guidance on site control and the community process. Leslie Cohen of Samuels & Associates, one of the Fenway’s most prominent mixed-use developers, shares insight on what clients seek from their attorneys, as well as on development trends. Jonathan Greeley, Director of Development Review for the Boston Planning and Development Agency and the former planner for the Fenway, offers his perspective on what made the Fenway a success, trends in mixed-use development across the city, and recent developments in agency policy and procedures.
