* * * * *Tackling racial injustice in child welfare and delinquency matters
This year’s Juvenile Delinquency & Child Welfare Law Conference brings you a cohesive online program that delves into issues of race and justice in the juvenile delinquency and child welfare practice areas. Our multidisciplinary planning committee has assembled a stellar lineup of speakers with strong voices and inspirational messages who have put their words into action.
Featuring remarks by newly-appointed SJC Chief Justice Kimberly S. Budd and Juvenile Court Chief Justice Amy Nechtem, the Conference begins with a call to action by Jonathan Allen, co-founder of the Leadership Brainery, a Boston-based non-profit organization that promotes diversity in leadership by empowering, uplifting and training college students to become the world’s next trailblazers. Dr. Vanessa Prosper, Clinical Coordinator at Boston Latin, then addresses the impact of racial trauma on the children, youth and parents we serve.
Sean Darling-Hammond of UC Berkeley explains the science of implicit bias and the steps we can take to reduce bias in ourselves and in others when making critical decisions about families. He’s followed by Sheila Graham of More than Words, a Boston nonprofit social enterprise committed to empowering system-involved youth with responsibilities in a business setting, who leads a discussion with two young people about their experiences in the system. Rahsaan D. Hall, Director of the ACLU’s Racial Justice Program, closes out the Conference with some inspiring words to apply what we’ve learned and move us to action.
