Fifty years ago, on September 1, 1974, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts created the Board of Bar Overseers (BBO), the Office of Bar Counsel (OBC), and the Clients’ Security Board (CSB). The primary charge of these interrelated organizations is to protect the public by maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism among members of the Massachusetts bar. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the BBO, OBC and CSB are hosting a series of events across the Commonwealth to inform the bar and the public about our interrelated missions, accomplishments, and opportunities for engagement.

The inaugural event is hosted in partnership with MCLE and Hampden County and Hampshire County Bar Associations, and is designed for members of the bar who practice in Western Massachusetts.

This session provides a comprehensive introduction to the BBO, OBC, and CSB and highlights some important milestones in the 50-year history of our organizations. We explain the disciplinary process relating to complaints against attorneys as carried out by the BBO, OBC, and Supreme Judicial Court. We provide insight into what attorneys can expect if they get a call from OBC’s Attorney Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP) or receive a formal complaint. We also explain the CSB’s process for compensating victims who have lost funds due to lawyer thefts. We introduce participants to resources available to attorneys and the public. Additionally, attendees learn about opportunities to participate in the work of the OBC, BBO, and CSB such as by serving as board members, hearing panel members, counsel to lawyers involved in the disciplinary system or claimants before the CSB, and more.
